The History of Thetford and District Dementia Support Group

Thetford and District Dementia Support Group (TADDS) started with a simple idea: to create a friendly, welcoming space for people with dementia and their carers. Founded by Joanne Mountjoy-Dixon, TADDS is all about support, connection, and making life a little easier.

How We Got Started

Thetford and District Dementia Support Group (TADDS) began with a simple goal: to bring people together. It all started on 25th July 2014, when we held our first group meeting in the meeting area of a sheltered housing complex. The space was quickly outgrown, and we moved to Cloverfields Community Church Hall, where we have continued to thrive ever since.

The idea behind TADDS came from Joanne Mountjoy-Dixon, an experienced Dementia Lead, who saw how little support was available locally for people living with dementia and their carers. Back in 2012, Joanne started a group called “Dementia Action Thetford & District” to provide the help that was so desperately needed. That initial idea grew into what we now know as TADDS – a safe and friendly space where people can meet, share, and feel valued.

Our Weekly Meetings

Our group meets every Friday from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Cloverfields Community Church Hall, and everyone is welcome – whether you’re living with dementia, caring for someone who is, or supporting a family member.

Fun and Activities

From 10:00 am to 12:00 pm, we run a variety of activities designed to bring people together. These aren’t just about keeping busy – they’re about making connections, having a laugh, and creating meaningful moments.

Sharing Lunch Together

At 12:00 pm, we sit down for a freshly cooked lunch, lovingly prepared and served to those who book in advance. Sharing a meal is a great way to wind down and enjoy each other’s company.

Growing Together and Looking Ahead

Since our first meeting in 2014, we’ve come a long way. TADDS officially became a registered charity in 2016, which has allowed us to grow and reach even more people. We’ve stayed true to our roots while adding workshops, training, and awareness events to help the community better understand dementia.

Building on Our Founder’s Vision to Support More People Every Day

Everything we’ve achieved comes back to the vision of our founder, Joanne Mountjoy-Dixon. Her experience and passion for helping others have been at the heart of TADDS since day one. She wanted to create a space where people with dementia and their carers could feel supported, and thanks to her dedication, that dream became a reality.
At TADDS, we’re all about keeping things simple but meaningful. We want to continue growing and helping more people in Thetford and the surrounding areas. Whether that’s through our Friday meetings, raising awareness, or building a dementia-friendly community, we’ll keep working hard to make life a little brighter for those living with dementia and their families.
